Who can register a .ie domain?
Anyone with a real connection to the island of Ireland – North and South, all 32 counties. You don’t need to explain why you want a particular name; you just show your connection once, and we send it to the .ie registry with your application.

Domain FAQs
If your customers are mainly in Ireland, a .ie domain signals that you’re local and tends to be trusted by Irish searchers. If you sell internationally, a .com may suit better. Many businesses register both.
No. Once the .ie registry has accepted your connection, you don’t need to send documents again. For later registrations we just tell the registry which .ie domains you already hold.
Yes. For .ie domains, Ireland means the whole island, so people, businesses and organisations in Northern Ireland qualify in the same way.
Yes. .ie domains can include the Irish vowels with a fada – á, é, í, ó and ú. Many people register the name both with and without the fada and point both at the same website.
Yes. If you sell your business or hand a domain on, we can change the holder. The new holder needs a connection to Ireland too, so they may be asked for proof in the same way.
Talk to us first. If a .ie domain was registered in bad faith – for example, to block or copy your registered trademark or business name – you can bring a case under the .ie dispute resolution policy (ieDRP), which is decided independently by WIPO.
Ask us before you order. Tell us who will own the domain and we’ll tell you which documents to have ready – most applications go through without any trouble.
Yes. DNS hosting costs €10 a year and lets you manage your domain’s DNS records through the control panel, without website or email hosting.
Yes. We copy your DNS records, including email settings, before the transfer, so your email keeps working throughout.
No. Since GDPR came in in 2018, public WHOIS lookups for .ie, .com and most other domains no longer show domain owners’ personal contact details, such as their address, email or phone number. There’s no need to pay extra to hide them.
Maybe not. Some companies send official-looking renewal notices or invoices that would actually move your domain to them, usually at a much higher price. Renewals with us only ever go through our client area, where you can see every invoice. If you get a letter or email you’re not sure about, don’t pay it – forward it to us and we’ll check.
